We’re here to help answer two of the latest questions in the world of urban transportation…
What is a Supergondola?
When are they coming?
Supergondolas are a pretty interesting new transit category - if you’re an urban mobility nerd. And they could solve a lot of problems.
But, a truly flexible urban gondola system has never been done before. So, we’re keeping an eye on it - just in case.
Here’s what we know so far…
What is a supergondola?
An urban supergondola (or super-gondola) is a term used within the transportation industry to describe a developing category of aerial urban transit systems. These systems aim to significantly expand the functionality and capacity of conventional gondola technology for potential use in urban environments.
What makes a gondola a supergondola?
Traditional gondola systems, commonly associated with ski resorts, operate using a fixed-cable mechanism where cabins are attached to a continuously moving cable loop driven by a large bullwheel. This basic design, which has been in use for centuries, defines the conventional "clothesline" style operation.
Given the limitations and inefficiencies of this legacy approach, several established manufacturers and emerging startups are exploring ways to modernize cable-based transit. These efforts aim to reimagine the gondola as a more flexible, on-demand system.
One proposed concept involves integrating elements of ride-hailing technology and autonomous mobility. The vision includes self-driving cabins capable of navigating a branching network of routes suspended above city streets, allowing for individualized point-to-point travel - similar in function to services like Uber or Lyft.
Systems that incorporate these features are sometimes referred to as "urban supergondolas." While the concept remains largely in development, it represents a new direction in aerial urban transport. Dig in if you want to know more about how these systems might function and the challenges involved in bringing them to scale.
Now that we know what a supergondola is, who’s working on it?

Aren’t you missing some companies?
We’re trying our best, but it’s almost a sure bet that we’ve missed someone. Please let us know so we can keep the coverage comprehensive.
This site focuses specifically on supergondolas - emerging aerial transit systems designed to expand the capabilities of traditional gondolas in urban settings. Although we have broader interest in related innovations such as robotaxis, autonomous shuttles, eVTOLs, and micromobility vehicles, those areas fall outside the scope of what this site is all about.
We love what companies like Zoox, Glydways, Autotrén, Ottobahn, and others are up to - but, we’re really only covering urban supergondolas for now.
